No. 10 — The Evergreen State

Note: This is an ongoing series which began here.

It might be a bit of a surprise that enough Washingtonians — 22 to be exact — appear on Ivy League track and field rosters to place the state among the top 10. After all, the northwestern-most state in the lower 48 outproduces the likes of Maryland, Rhode Island, Florida and Ohio as it relates to Hepsters.

One of the recent products, Cornell freshman Devin McMahon, earned first-team All-Ivy status at the 2010 Heps Cross Country Championships. Three other Washington natives — Harvard’s Nicole Cochran, Brown’s Reginald Cole and Princeton’s Emma Ruggiero — earned All-Ivy notice in 2010.

Getting to know Washington a bit more:

Unsurprisingly, the state fish is the steelhead trout and the state fruit the apple, but who knew that the state dance is the square dance, the state gem is petrified wood and the state’s folk song would fit in at one Ivy campus — Woody Guthrie’s Roll On, Columbia, Roll On. The three current Lions from the state — senior Laura Vogel, junior Jason Marks and sophomore Blake Cowan — should teach their teammates the lyrics.
