Recordbreakers
The 1976 Heps were the first fully metric Games, which meant that several records were established because it was the first time the events were contested. Some metric events had been contested in 1935 and 1936. The new marks for the events held for the first time in four decades:
• James Brown of Penn in the 100m dash (:10.71), breaking the mark of :10.8 set by Columbia’s Ben Johnson in 1935.
• Charles Hedrick of Princeton in the 800m run (1:50.3), breaking the mark of 1:53.0 set by Penn’s Gene Venzke in 1935.
• Craig Masback of Princeton in the 1,500m run (3:51.2), breaking the mark of 3:52.6 set by Penn’s Gene Venzke in 1935.
• Harold Schwab of Penn in the 110m hurdles (:14.3), breaking the mark of :15.0 set by Harvard’s Milton Green in 1935.
• The 4x100m relay of Penn (:41.6), breaking the mark of 41.8 set by Dartmouth in 1936.
• The 4x400m relay of Dartmouth (3:13.3), breaking the mark of 3:18.0 set by Cornell in 1935.
• The five individual events contested for the first time yielded these new recordholders — Edward James of Penn in the 200m dash (:21.48); Daryl Anderson of Navy in the 400m dash (:47.61); David Merrick of Penn in the 5,000m run (14:04.0); Dennis Trujillo of Army in the 10,000m run (29:36.0) and Harold Schwab of Penn in the 440m hurdles (:52.0).
• Melvyn Embree of Harvard in the high jump (7-3), breaking his own mark of 7-1 1/2 set in 1975.
